Dr Stanisław Gajda is a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international dental organisation which recognises outstanding dentists. Pierre Fauchard (1678 -1761) is considered the father of modern dentistry. Working from his medical practice at the University of Angers, he was the first dental surgeon, and as his career developed, he moved to Paris in 1718, where he was recognized as France's foremost dental surgeon. During this time, he realised that there were no good textbooks on dentistry, so he set about writing his own, based on his medical experience. Completed in 1723, "Le Chirurgien Dentiste" (The Dental Surgeon) described in detail all the dental issues of the time. It was published in 1728 in France in two volumes, with 64 chapters and 42 pages of illustrations, and in 1733 was translated into German, with a second, revised and extended, edition published in France in 1746. Below are some pages of this pioneering work from the extremely rare first German edition, from the private collection of Dr Stanisław Gajda.
