Periodontology

Treatment of periodontitis, open and closed curettage, splinting of teeth.

One of the most common conditions in this area is periodontitis, commonly referred to as gum disease. It is caused by bacteria present in dental plaque and tartar.

The early symptoms of gum inflammation include redness, swelling, and bleeding when brushing or flossing. If left untreated, these symptoms worsen, leading to tooth mobility, displacement and, ultimately, tooth loss as a result of bone loss.

Thanks to early diagnosis and effective periodontal treatment, we can stop the progression of this disease and restore gum health. Take care of your teeth and avoid serious complications – schedule an appointment today!

Periodontitis prevention focuses on maintaining proper oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist.

Daily tooth brushing, flossing, and using mouthwashes significantly reduce plaque build-up, which is the main factor causing gum diseases.

Do not ignore the first signs of gingivitis, such as redness, swelling, or bleeding, as early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment. Regular check-ups allow issues to be identified sooner, helping to slow down the disease progression, and, in some instances, stop its development.

Take care of your oral health – prevent periodontitis, and your gums will thank you!

Most Common Symptoms of Periodontitis:

  • Bleeding during tooth brushing
  • Pain and swelling of the gums
  • Receding gum lines
  • Pus discharge from gum pockets
  • Teeth appearing longer
  • Loose teeth
  • Bad breath

In more advanced stages of periodontitis, surgical procedures may be required to eliminate the infection.

Curettage involves removing plaque and subgingival deposits using specialized curettes and ultrasonic scalers.

There are two types of curettage:

  • Closed Curettage is used when periodontal pockets are present – deepened spaces between the gum and the tooth caused by periodontitis. Special curettes clean the roots of subgingival tartar, reducing inflammation and promoting healing. This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and is tissue-preserving, with minimal impact on the patient’s overall condition.

In cases of very advanced inflammation, tooth mobility and loss of surrounding tissues – particularly bone – may occur. In such situations, the following treatments are recommended:

  • Tooth Splinting – This involves joining individual teeth to form a stabilising block, helping to support loose teeth and prevent their further displacement. Splinting may be temporary (e.g. after surgical procedures) or permanent.
  • Guided Tissue Regeneration and Bone Regeneration: With the use of the latest advancements in material engineering, barrier membranes, and supportive materials allow for bone tissue regeneration through guided tissue regeneration methods.
