Why Is Prosthetic Treatment Important?
Prosthetic therapy is crucial because untreated tooth loss can lead to:
- Bone resorption
- Shifting and tilting of neighbouring and opposing teeth
- Gum disease and periodontal issues
- Difficulty eating
- Changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
- Systemic diseases (such as heart disease and diabetes)
- Negative effects on facial aesthetics
Even the loss of a single tooth can have serious consequences for the entire body. Therefore, prosthetic treatment plays a significant role in both oral health and overall well-being. It is worth consulting a specialist at Dr Gajda’s Clinic to receive personalized advice on the best treatment options.
Prosthetic Restorations for Changing Tooth Shape or Colour
Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin porcelain shells bonded to the front teeth to enhance their shape and aesthetics. They effectively conceal unsightly fillings, chipped edges, or discoloration.
Prosthetic Restorations in Case of Damage or Loss of a Single Tooth Crown:
Inlay, Onlay, and Overlay
These are excellent alternatives to large fillings. They are made of pressed porcelain by a dental technician based on impressions taken by the dentist. This solution is more durable, precise, and better sealed than a regular composite filling, ensuring an optimal occlusion for the patient.
Compared to regular fillings, inlays, onlays, and overlays are more durable, harder, and more resistant to wear and leaching. Moreover, they offer better protection against recurrent cavities. The lifespan of an inlay, onlay, or overlay is generally much longer than that of a regular filling, depending on factors such as patient hygiene and the size of the defect.
- Inlay: A filling that restores the chewing surface of posterior teeth (molars and premolars).
- Onlay: A filling that reconstructs not only the chewing surface but also the lateral walls of the tooth, allowing for a perfect restoration of contact points between teeth..
- Overlay: A crown-like restoration that covers the entire chewing surface of the tooth, including all cusps and contact points with adjacent teeth, fully recreating the natural anatomical shape of the tooth.
Post and Core (Root Post)
This prosthetic solution enables the reconstruction of a lost tooth crown on its natural root. The post consists of two parts: a root section, which is placed inside the tooth root, and a crown section, onto which the prosthetic crown is fixed. The purpose of this procedure is to reinforce a weakened root and rebuild a lost or damaged tooth crown. However, before placing a root post, the tooth must undergo endodontic (root canal) treatment.
Types of Root Posts:
- Cast Posts, made of gold or steel alloys, custom-manufactured for high durability.
- Zirconium Dioxide Posts, which offer a tooth-like colour, full biocompatibility, and high strength.
- Prefabricated Titanium or Fiberglass Posts, available in different sizes, which can be cemented during the same visit after root canal treatment.
All types of posts provide a stable foundation for prosthetic tooth reconstruction. Fiberglass and zirconium posts are aesthetically superior, especially for highly translucent all-ceramic crowns.
Dental Crown
A dental crown is used when a tooth is so severely damaged that a conventional filling is no longer sufficient—for example, in cases of mechanical fractures or advanced decay. The prosthetic crown covers the damaged tooth, restoring its original appearance and function.
Made from high-quality materials, it protects, strengthens, and reconstructs the tooth, providing the same level of comfort as natural teeth. It is a long-lasting and effective solution that allows patients to enjoy a restored tooth for many years.
Prosthetic Restorations for Missing One or Multiple Teeth
Dental Bridge
A dental bridge is a prosthetic solution used to replace one or several missing teeth. The bridge consists of interconnected crowns that are anchored on adjacent natural teeth (abutments) or dental implants. In the mouth, the bridge occupies the same space as natural teeth and distributes chewing forces physiologically, ensuring the patient does not experience discomfort while wearing it.
There are different types of dental bridges:
- Porcelain bridges with a metal framework (steel or gold)
- All-ceramic Bridges
- Full-contour zirconia Bridges
- Zirconia bridges layered with porcelain
The most suitable type is always chosen by the dentist in consultation with the patient.
Prosthetic Restorations for Missing Multiple or All Teeth
Dental prostheses
Dental prostheses replace missing teeth, restoring the patients’ ability to function normally and helping them regain confidence and the joy of a full smile. Dental prosthetics offers various types of dentures, including partial dentures, which replace only missing teeth, or full dentures in the case of complete edentulism.
They can be made from various materials such as acrylic or metal, depending on the individual needs of the patient.
Thanks to the advanced technologies used in our dental laboratory, modern dentures are more comfortable, durable, and natural-looking than ever before. Each denture is custom-made to ensure a perfect fit, exceptional quality, and maximum comfort. Regular denture hygiene and routine dental check-ups are essential to keep them in perfect condition for many years.
Each type of prosthesis described below has its own features and advantages, and the choice of the most suitable option depends on the individual needs of the patient and the condition of their remaining teeth.
Types of Dentures
Immediate Dentures
Immediate dentures are temporary prosthetic restorations made before the extraction of damaged teeth and placed directly after their removal, while the anaesthesia is still effective. All procedures required to fabricate the denture are completed prior to the extractions, ensuring the patient does not experience the discomfort of being without teeth. Although this is a temporary solution, it allows the patient to function normally, continue daily activities, and maintain professional and social comfort. Immediate dentures also support proper healing of post-extraction wounds.
Removable Partial or Complete Dentures
These are removable prosthetic restorations that the patient can place and remove by themselves. They restore missing teeth by relying on the gums and palate for support.
Partial Dentures
Partial Dentures – used to replace a small number of missing teeth – consist of an acrylic base with missing teeth embedded in it. Partial dentures adhere to the base better than complete dentures, as they are often supported by the remaining natural teeth using clasps, locks, or retainers. These are metal components that keep the prosthesis in place on the remaining teeth. This eliminates the need for denture adhesives (which some patients may be allergic to), though many patients find these prostheses aesthetically unappealing.
Complete Dentures
Complete Dentures – Used when all teeth are missing, complete dentures can be made from acrylic or nylon. They remain in position through suction to the soft tissues. However, due to the limited retention, particularly in the lower jaw, denture adhesive is often required. These prostheses do not contain metal connectors, but may be reinforced with a special mesh made from precious metal alloys, containing gold or silver. Patients using this type of restoration can smile and chew naturally, and their face does show signs of sagging associated with edentulism, the total tooth loss. Although relatively affordable, complete dentures have drawbacks: adaptation can be difficult, eating may be uncomfortable, they can accelerate bone resorption due to uneven force distribution, and they require replacement every few years.
Framework Dentures
These are removable prostheses used to replace partially missing teeth. Their main structure is a metal framework, with clasps that anchor the denture to the natural teeth. Although traditional metal clasps are not very aesthetic, modern alternatives, such as snaps, locks, or telescopic crowns (overdenture), provide more discreet and precise retention. Unlike acrylic dentures, framework dentures transfer chewing forces directly onto the neighbouring teeth rather than the mucous membrane, preventing excessive pressure on gum tissues and bones, helping to minimise bone resorption. Additionally, they also offer a smaller, more comfortable palatal plate.
Overdenture Prostheses
Overdentures are made on attachments such as snaps, locks, or clips and serve as an alternative to traditional framework dentures. These restorations have no visible wire clasps, making them highly aesthetic. The overdenture prosthesis offers many advantages compared to other types of dentures. It is particularly stable, durable, and aesthetic, with no visible attachments, and provides a very comfortable fit. The benefits also include excellent stabilisation on the underlying tissues, no excessive pressure on the mucous membrane, and an exceptional comfort. This is an excellent solution for people who desire a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing smile.
Telescopic Dentures
These are framework dentures used to replace missing teeth with the support of remaining natural teeth. These natural teeth are covered with telescopic crowns – specially designed crowns that fit into each other. This design provides a secure and stable connection between the natural teeth and the denture.
Implant-Supported Dentures
These are partial or full dentures stabilised by implants, restoring the appearance and function of natural teeth. Through the natural healing process of osseointegration, implants fuse with the bone and form a stable foundation on which the dentist can attach the denture using a locator system, bar system, or telescopic crowns. These solutions functionally and aesthetically replicate the lost teeth. The choice of the connecting system depends on individual conditions of the patient’s prosthetic field. In implant-supported prosthetic treatment for edentulism (complete tooth loss in the upper or lower jaw), placing two implants in the lower jaw and four implants in the upper jaw significantly improves chewing comfort and denture stability.
Implant treatment can take several months, but during this period, you can use a temporary prosthetic restoration, ensuring the missing tooth is not visible. This is particularly important when the missing tooth is in the “aesthetic zone,” where gaps are immediately noticeable.
