Co to jest diastema?
Terminem „diastema” określa się szparę, przestrzeń między górnymi jedynkami, która w niektórych przypadkach stanowi wyłącznie problem estetyczny — jednak diastema o szerokości powyżej 2 mm stanowi również zagrożenie dla kondycji zębów Pacjenta. Do konsekwencji związanych z występowaniem diastemy należy zaliczyć:
– Problemy z wymową — diastema powoduje m.in. seplenienie, problemy z wymową głosek takich jak „ś, ć, dź, ź”,
– Wady zgryzu — przestrzeń między jedynkami może powodować stłoczenie pozostałych zębów, w niektórych przypadkach sama w sobie również jest wadą zgryzu,
– Choroby przyzębia — na przykład paradontoza, która prowadzi do rozchwiania zębów i ich wypadania.

W leczeniu diastem wykorzystuje się także licówki. Zamykanie diastemy z wykorzystaniem licówek jest bardzo szybkie, a uzyskany efekt pozostaje na lata. W tym celu rekomendowane jest wykorzystanie licówek porcelanowych. Skorzystanie z licówek nie jest zalecane Pacjentom z bardzo szeroką diastemą — ich zastosowanie mogłoby spowodować nienaturalny efekt.
Licówki porcelanowe to najpopularniejszy rodzaj licówek, wiernie odwzorowujący naturalne zęby. Charakteryzują się dużą twardością i elastycznością. Porcelana pochłania i odbija światło tak jak prawdziwy ząb, nie ulega przebarwieniom i nie pochłania barwników z pożywienia. Na porcelanie trudniej niż na naturalnych zębach tworzy się płytka nazębna, dlatego bardzo często zakłada się je na przednich zębach, szczególnie widocznych podczas mówienia.

Jak powstaje diastema?
Wyróżnia się trzy rodzaje diastem — ze względu na sposób ich powstawania:
– Fizjologiczna — występuje naturalnie u dzieci w wieku 7-9 lat, znika samoistnie,
– Prawdziwa — związana m.in. z przerostem wędzidełka wargi górnej,
– Rzekoma — związana z zaburzeniami rozmiaru i liczby zębów — brakiem lub nieprawidłowym rozmiarem siekaczy bocznych, a także występowaniem zębów nadliczbowych.
